How I got into worms

I love to garden and cook.  I’m not great at either, but oddly enough, worms connect both of those passions and make me better at both.  What a weird statement, but yeah, worms do.

When I cook, I want fresh and nutritious foods and preparing fresh ingredients leaves me scraps.  Banana peels, apple cores, pepper tops, potato skins, salad mix that went bad, you name it.  Those scraps invariably were getting tossed in the waste bin.  In fact my family of 4 was throwing away over 200 pounds of food scraps a year.  How do I know?  I weigh them and tally it up when I feed the worms.  I didn’t feel good about it until I started my worm bin.

The worms eat it all up, leaving me with bunches of castings (worm poop) becoming a soil amendment and fertilizer that I then feed my plants in the garden and get better, more nutritious food for future meals.  Instead of a doom loop, it creates a virtuous cycle.  Stacking minor habit adjustments on top of one another.
